https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/07/artingstalls-gin-created-with-us-consumers-in-mind/feed/ 0 Hollywood director Paul Feig has revealed that he curated his debut gin brand, Artingstall’s, with American consumers in mind.

Feig, whose filmography includes BridesmaidsLast Christmas and A Simple Favour, first premiered Artingstall’s Gin in the US in 2020, before debuting the brand in the UK in late 2021. Speaking to The Spirits Business, Feig explained the process behind creating his gin, and noted how many of the decisions he made when choosing the flavour profile were influenced by the US market. “I had been looking for years to find somebody to create a gin with, but I'm not a rock star or a movie star, so it had been really hard,” he said. “But I finally found this company in Calgary, Canada, called Minhas, and they liked the lifestyle that I represented. “They had actually turned down a bunch of collaborations with rock stars before me, just because, from their point of view, people just put their name on it, then they disappear, but I was really passionate about it.” Feig explained that he was interviewed by the distillery “for hours” so the team could get an understanding of the flavour profile he wanted the gin to have before providing him with a series of distillates to try. “I said ‘I want this to take off in the US’, so let's pull back on the juniper.” Feig noted that in America, people “think they don't like gin, because everybody had a weird experience when they were a kid opening a bottle of Beefeater that put them off. “Just recently I was at somebody's house and I was making Martinis and I asked my friend if she’d like to try one. She said ‘I literally can't have gin’ and explained she had a traumatic experience in her past with gin that put her off.” As a result, Feig wanted to create an approachable gin, with the incorporation of citrus and floral notes “just kind of floating under the surface”. “It still has that Juniper because I want it to be a gin, obviously, but just not have it be that slug in the face.” He noted the gins that he "came upon", which included Bombay Sapphire, had an "old-timey kind of flavour" from being so juniper-forward, which, while he found enjoyable, was not what he was looking to achieve with Artingstall's Gin. "When I finally had a Hendrick's," he said ,"I liked that, because that pulled back [on the juniper], but I don't necessarily love the cucumber thing going on. So I realised I wanted mine to be friendly, and nothing too much." The gin features 11 botanicals, including orris root, coriander, cassia bark and cardamom. In addition, Feig was keen to create a gin that would work as a substitute for vodka in a number of cocktails. “I really wanted to make sure you could have a good chance of swapping into a vodka-based cocktail, and have it only be additive to it, not compete with it. “That's one of my favourite things about my gin – that it works in about 95% of vodka-based cocktails. It just adds a little bit of something, you know?” Feig said he plans to launch new Artingstall's expressions in the future, and has already developed a recipe using grapefruit peel that "just makes it a little more clean tasting", which he hopes to release next. Feig confirmed that despite the challenges that come with launching alcohol in the US due to the various different laws in each state, Artingstall's is performing well in America. "We've got into some really great on-trade venues like the Polo Bar in New York, which is amazing. So we're adding really cool places, it's just a slow burn." Meanwhile in the UK, where Artingstall's is distributed via Oak & Still, it is more readily available "in stores like Gerry's in Soho, but also through Amazon, so people can get it easier". Artingstall's Gin is bottled at 42% ABV, and available to purchase for RRP £39.95 (US$51.64). Last year, Feig published his debut cocktail book: Cocktail Time; The ultimate guide to grown-up fun.]]>

https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/07/cazcabel-tequila-arrives-in-us/feed/ 0 Tequila brand Cazcabel has entered the US after securing distribution in several states, including California, New York and Kentucky.

The independent brand currently exports its range of products to more than 40 international markets, and this new distribution deal follows the brand’s introduction to the US in February this year. The brand has ambitions to expand distribution to 35 states by 2024. Cazcabel said the US was the ‘largest and most competitive market’ for Tequila, and therefore the area is said to be a ‘compelling focus’ for the brand. Jeffrey Allen, chief operating officer of MS Walker, Cazcabel’s contracted partner for both New York and New Jersey, commented: “We are regularly inundated with new agave projects being pitched to us but when we were connected with the Cazcabel team the brand really caught our attention. “The quality of the liquids across the range is excellent. The value for the customer and ultimately the consumer is hard to beat.” Cazcabel said it has received a ‘highly positive’ reception from bars in the American market. Notably, the states of Colorado, headed by state manager Melissa Ray, and California, supported by the Californian sales team, Drew Garrison and Josh Allen, have experienced 'exceptional' results, with the first year target having been met within a four-month timeframe. By 2025, Cazcabel forecasts the US will be its largest export market. Cazcabel’s range includes both a blanco and a reposado bottling, as well as the brand’s ‘playful’ flavoured expressions of Coconut, Honey, and Coffee. Various expressions were awarded Master medals in The Tequila & Mezcal Masters, and The Liqueur Masters. Pricing in the US is around US$29.99 for Cazcabel Blanco, US$34.99 for Cazcabel Reposado, and US$27.99 for Cazcabel Honey, Cazcabel Coffee, and Cazcabel Coconut. Cazcabel’s US team is led by managing partners Jeffrey Shows and Craig D'Eletto. New appointments With the continued growth and future aspirations of the brand, Chris Richards has been appointed to the new role of global marketing director, and is charged with growing the profile of the brand across markets. “It is a hugely exciting time to be joining the brand,” Richards said, “with a truly unique opportunity to work together with the Vazquez family on the development of the new distillery with the mission of supporting local communities and continually improving the sustainability credentials of not only Tequila production but agave farming. “This will ensure we’re well positioned to meet the increasing global demand for Tequila for years to come.”]]>

Turncoat Distillery, located in Liverpool in the UK, creates Cascade Gin. Owen-Jones has previously worked at Liverpool Gin Distillery, and has also spent time working for the Cambridge Distillery. He said: “I’m thrilled to join the talented team at Turncoat. It’s been a rocky 12 months for the brand and I’m super excited to help move the brand and products forward. “There are some great gins in the portfolio and we have some really innovative products on the horizon.” In December 2022, Turncoat Distillery was due to close for good after six years of operation. The distillery started out in a garage, but grew to more than 40 employees and an annual turnover of almost £1 million (US$1.2m). However, in February this year, entrepreneur Edward Ridding bought the distillery and saved it from closure. Ridding commented on Owen-Jones’ appointment: “Harrison brings a wealth of experience and creativity to the team that is already helping to move the brand forward to deliver exceptional products. “In the short time he’s been with us, he’s already increased productivity and made improvements to our end product. With a new bottle design on the horizon, it’s an exciting time here at Turncoat.”]]>

Australian brand Lyre’s has completed its latest ‘strategic’ funding round, which was led by investors DSquared and Morgan Creek Consumer Fund, and supported by existing shareholders. The funds will be used to ‘drive momentum’ in key markets, such as Australia, North America, Europe and the Middle East. The alcohol-free producer said it had continued to see ‘extraordinary’ year-on-year growth in all major markets. Lyre’s claims to sell one bottle every 30 seconds in more than 60 countries across multiple channels. The multi-million-pound funding round will enable the firm to meet global production and inventory demands. Greg Bundy, Lyre’s chairman, said: “Now, with the support of our investing partners, we can provide additional resources, improved manufacturing, and infrastructure to support our valued customers around the world.” The Lyre’s range includes 18 non-alcoholic ‘spirits’, eight ready-to-drink cocktails and an alcohol-free sparkling wine. All products are vegan and fully recyclable. The brand is available in 5,000-plus venues in Australia and New Zealand, including Quantas Lounges and Accor Hotels, as well as major retailers. New CEO Gloster, who is Lyre’s current chief marketing officer, will become CEO of the company. He will take over the position from founder Mark Livings. Gloster has overseen growth for the company in the US, and joined Lyre's when it was founded in 2019. Lyre's said Gloster has been key to delivering the company's 'outstanding' growth, brand health and equity position. He previously worked for Coca-Cola Amatil in Australia and Pacific Beverages. “I am humbled to be given the opportunity to lead Lyre’s into a new chapter of growth and build upon our vision of changing the way the world drinks,” said Gloster. “Our new expanded leadership structure ensures accountability across all our strategic priorities and business functions. I am excited to work with such a capable and passionate team that is energised and ready to lead the business into our next exciting stage.” Lyre’s secured £9m (US$11.5m) in funding in 2020 and was valued at more than £100m (US$138.7m) in 2021. The alcohol-free producer gained more than 1,000 new bar and restaurant listings in the UK during the first quarter of 2022. Located in Leith’s 'historic' port in Edinburgh, Scotland, the £13 million (US$16.53m) nine-storey distillery is due to open later in 2023. The head of whisky role is one of 50 long-term local jobs that will be created by the distillery in the coming year. Sood, who formerly held the position of operations manager at The Lakes Distillery, said: “Joining the iconic Scotch whisky industry was always a dream of mine, and immersing myself in a distillation process as unique as Port of Leith is already proving to be an incredible experience. “Alongside getting to work with such a dedicated, passionate and forward-thinking team, I’m honoured to be leading in all aspects of whisky making as we work towards bringing our new world class single malt to people across the globe.” Paddy Fletcher, co-founder of Port of Leith Distillery, said: “Vaibhav’s appointment is a huge step forward for us as we look towards starting production in the next couple of months. “Already, he has been instrumental in streamlining elements of our production process, spearheading our wood management program and recruiting for our whisky operations team, and we look forward to his input in creating our exceptional new wave whisky.” With tours, tastings, and a top floor mezzanine bar boasting panoramic views of Leith and Edinburgh, the Port of Leith Distillery anticipates it will attract 25,000 visitors in its first year, with projections soaring to 160,000 annual visitors by 2025. Furthermore, the distillery is expected to produce up to one million bottles of whisky per year. It will harness locally grown barley in its whisky production, and will utilise years of research into yeast and fermentation. In addition, it has procured casks from premium producers in Spain, Portugal and the US. Port of Leith Distillery is the latest long-term investment in Leith by co-owners Ian Stirling and Fletcher, following the opening of the Lind & Lime Gin Distillery in May 2022. The eco-friendly gin distillery – which is powered by 100% green electricity – has since welcomed more than 6,000 visitors to its tasting, bottling and cocktail-making tours, with numbers forecast to increase to 15,000 visitors annually this year.]]>

Returning for its third year, the scheme was first created in 2020 to help reduce disparities of women in senior positions and curb inequalities within the hospitality industry. Made up of newcomers and inspiring mixologists, the 2023 cohort has been selected from a wide range of hospitality venues across the UK. This year’s scholars are: Buky Adegbulugbe (Sip Geek); Morgan Hughes (Margoux); Clea Iqbal (Leafy Elephant); Elena Bulatovskaja (Sexy Fish); Alice Cable (Fife Arms); Emma Mitchell (The Metropolitan); Lili Johnston (Harts Group); Madison Moore (Rockwater); Megan Jenson (Smuggler’s Cove); and Rachel Marchesan (Soho House). Double Dutch co-founder Raissa de Haas commented: “We are so excited to welcome our female bartending scholars for 2023 and look forward to seeing how they grow as part of the programme. “Women are so underrepresented in senior and management positions, which is why we’re dedicated to fostering upcoming female talent within the hospitality industry.” The scholarship will consist of three months of curated sessions intended to help the scholars build on the knowledge and skills needed to level up in the industry. Based on feedback from the 2022 scheme, the sessions will have a greater mixture of in-person sessions, and will cover a wide range of topics, including mixology, signature serves, building menus, flavour pairings, mindful drinking, social media, personal branding and professional coaching. The cohort will be provided with opportunities to engage with renowned mentors in the drinks industry, offering them invaluable knowledge, inspiration, and guidance in their fields. Mentors in this year's programme include Esther Medina-Cuesta, alchemy specialist, and mixologist and consultant Nicolas Medicamento. Emma Stokes, founder of Gin Monkey, will be among the professionals guiding the scholars on social media. Double Dutch co-founder Joyce de Haas added: “We have a great line-up of mentors involved in this year’s programme, bringing such invaluable knowledge and experience to our scholars. We’re proud to be able to make this happen and can’t wait to see how our scholars grow over the next three months.” The first scholarship session was held 19 June at the Club Soda Tasting Room in London, and the second session will be hosted at 58 and Co Distillery in Haggerston, London, on 10 July. The scholarship will culminate in a graduation ceremony held at Hayman's Distillery in September.]]>

With Caspar’s leadership abilities and vision, I’m sure Glenmorangie and Ardbeg will raise the bar ever higher in the net chapter.” Jonas Tåhlin, president and CEO of the Spirits Division at Moët Hennessy, the wine and spirits arm of LVMH, highlighted how Moradpour has doubled the profits of the Glenmorangie and Ardbeg whiskies. “Congratulations to Thomas for his achievements at Glenmorangie and Ardbeg,” Tåhlin said. “Driving innovation and excellence, he has enabled the brands to flourish and grow, more than doubling their profits. I wish him success as he moves on within the LVMH family to Dom Pérignon. “Caspar has already demonstrated his exceptional talent and leadership skills, and I have full confidence that the business will continue to thrive with him at the helm.” MacRae has worked closely with Moradpour. He boasts 20 years’ industry experience, and has been head of The Glenmorangie Company’s marketing and commercial teams since 2018. He has overseen the transformation of the Glenmorangie and Ardbeg Scotch whisky brands, and helped to develop award-winning campaigns for both labels. Furthermore, the company credited MacRae with ‘super-charging’ its e-commerce business, which has grown seven-fold since 2020. MacRae commented: “I have always dreamed of leading brands as renowned as Glenmorangie and Ardbeg, so I am thrilled to take the baton from Thomas. “I look forward to working with the teams here in Scotland and around the world as we continue on our mission to ensure the success of our brands, our workforce and the communities around our distilleries long into the future.”]]>

Monplaisir is a 37-year veteran of the rum industry, and currently heads St Lucia Distillers. She has been a member of the Wirspa board of directors for a number of years. This also marks the first time the association will be led by a member of the Organisation of the Eastern Caribbean States. She said: “We have many challenges to face, both in our supply chains and in the international market, but our products speak for themselves, and we see a bright future for Caribbean Rum.” Clement ‘Jimmy’ Lawrence, head of the Jamaica rum producers, has also been elected to a new role – Lawrence will assume the position of vice-chair of Wirspa. Three new directors have also been hired: Antoine Couvreur of Mount Gay Distilleries in Barbados, Graham Williams of Renegade Rum in Grenada, and Perla Perdomo of Travellers Liquors of Belize. Rum industry challenges Wirspa members, including those from all the countries of the Caribbean community and the Dominican Republic, held a meeting under previous chair Komal Samaroo to discuss the issues important to rum producers, such as facilitating the opening of markets for premium rum exports. Monplaisir said: “The region is poised to realise the opportunities presented by new non-traditional markets, and has the quality products, packaging and production capacity to take advantage of the rapid growth in premium spirits demand in these emerging markets.” Another key issue discussed was excessive consumption of rum by consumers. Monplaisir added: “We have already made great progress over the past few years to improve labelling and most of our products now carry advice against drinking under the legal age, drinking while pregnant, and drinking while driving, as well as information on servings and calories. “But we need to go further. We also agreed to ramp up our efforts to implement practical measures to reduce access by underage persons to alcohol and to support government efforts around reducing drinking and driving. We have the resources and the commitment to make a difference and we intend to do so.” Secretary officials were also present at the meeting. Samaroo commented: “We have always enjoyed a productive and cordial relationship with secretariat officials, and this engagement cemented that. It complements our close collaboration with our governments to ensure the continued growth of this very important industry, for some time now, the number one non-mineral export earner for the region.” Other topics discussed include challenges in the supply chain, the sourcing of raw materials such as molasses and climate considerations. In 2021, SB spoke to the CEO of Wirspa to discuss regulators refusing to back the industry’s call for clearer proof of provenance.]]>

https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/06/new-riff-founder-to-retire/feed/ 0 The chief executive officer of New Riff Distilling, Ken Lewis, will retire in 2024 and will be replaced by Hannah Lowen.

Lewis's retirement will coincide with the distillery's 10th anniversary. The company will then be led by a three-person leadership team, who are all current employees. Lowen, who is currently vice-president of operations, will become CEO; Mollie Lewis, currently director of sales and Lewis's daughter, will transition to the role of president; and Denny Gorman, director of engineering and logistics, will become chief operating officer.
"From the beginning, New Riff has been about innovation — about trying new things, about growing and exploring what we could do in the whiskey space,” Ken Lewis said.
“In that spirit, it is time for a new chapter at New Riff. Although it is hard for me to leave, I am excited to see what’s ahead and to celebrate the distillery’s successes in the future. I could not imagine a better group of people to take the helm and they are the reason I know it is the right time for me to step back.”
Lowen has worked with New Riff since before its distillery opened, and established its operating systems, company branding and distillery programmes as the company launched.
Mollie has served as sales director since the New Riff was founded in 2014, and has experience as an international export manager in Italy.
Gorman is a professional engineer and joined the team in 2019 after more than a decade at The Boston Beer Company in Cincinnati.
The brand said its production and storage facilities have expanded in recent years, with a new barrel warehouse added this year and a distillery expansion that increased production by 50% in 2021.
New Riff has also increased its distribution, with its products available in 31 US states.
In March, New Riff revealed it would begin a US$3 million renovation of its public areas to improve visitor experience, including a new home for its tasting and cocktail bar. Ken continued: “Values and company culture are important to me. New Riff is a 100% family-owned business and will stay that way. "It’s the only way we have the independence to eschew the exclusive drive for profits, share our success with our career employees, and live up to our values. Career employees give their best years to taking care of our company and in return we will take care of them in their retirement." Ken has spent his career modernising Kentucky laws regarding the spirits industry, including initiating a court case that led to credit cards being allowed to purchase alcohol. He added: "My life has meaning because of these values — how hollow a life that is selfish and greedy. “I founded New Riff for the entrepreneurial challenge — and to create a world-class brand, enrich my community through bourbon tourism, and make a huge difference in the lives of many employee families for decades to come."]]>

Appleby has been interim CEO for Zamora Company USA since November 2022. He takes over the position from Corbett, who will serve as a senior advisor for Zamora until September 2023. Appleby joined Zamora Company’s US arm in 2019 as marketing director. During his time at the firm, Zamora said Appleby has helped it increase net sales by 56% and total volume by 37%. The company’s flagship Spanish liqueur, Licor 43, posted volume growth of 140% in the States from 2018 to 2022. “Few companies in this competitive industry have grown as fast and as successfully as Zamora Company USA, and that’s a testament not only to our talented team and our world-class wine and spirits brands, but also to the vision and leadership of the Zamora Family who understood the opportunity and the importance of creating a US-based business cluster here five years ago,” said Appleby. “I’m proud and honoured to step into this role and take on the privilege of leading and building this organisation into a top 20 wine and spirits supplier in the US.” Appleby will report to Javier Pijoan, CEO of Zamora Company, which is headquartered in the Spanish capital of Madrid. “The US is a crucial market for Zamora Company, which we firmly believe could top 30% of our global business within the next several years,” Pijoan added. The CEO also noted Appleby’s “impressive experience and strategic expertise in this market, coupled with his ability to build and lead high-performing teams”. Before joining Zamora Company, Appleby spent more than 20 years in senior management roles across sales and marketing at Rebecca Creek Distillery, Rémy Cointreau USA, Brown-Forman, Pernod Ricard, Red Bull North America, and Glazer’s Distributors. Zamora Company's spirits portfolio also includes Martin Miller's Gin and American whiskey Yellow Rose. Licor 43 recently expanded its ready-to-drink range with a coconut milk-based variant to attract vegans. The Spanish liqueur is close to selling one million nine-litre cases annually after its sales grew by 22.5% in 2022 to reach 0.98m cases.]]>

https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/06/redemption-whiskey-hires-master-blender/feed/ 0 American whiskey brand Redemption has appointed Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co's Alan Kennedy as its new master blender.

Kennedy takes over the role from Dave Carpenter, who is currently the distillery manager for spirits producer Jeptha Creed, based in Shelbyville, Kentucky. Charged with the task of ‘restoring rye whiskey to its pre-Prohibition prominence’ with an emphasis on innovation, Kennedy will lead all aspects of production at the distillery, located in Lexington, Kentucky. In his new position, Kennedy will ensure the 'highest quality and consistency' of Redemption's current portfolio, while bringing 'new and innovative sensorial whiskeys' to drinkers. "After learning about the first-of-its-kind Redemption Sur Lee innovation [a technique inspired by the French sur lie winemaking process], it really changed my view on the possibilities about what rye whiskey could be," said Kennedy. "The brand's vision to restore rye whiskey to its pre-Prohibition glory by creating rye-forward whiskeys that showcase this exemplary grain is one I'm proud to shepherd, and I could not be more thrilled to join the Redemption Whiskey team as master blender. “I look forward to continuing to tell Redemption's story through our established expressions and the new ones we'll create together." Kennedy will oversee the brand’s portfolio, including its core whiskeys, specialty series, Single Barrel Select programme and barrel-proof bottlings, as well as new limited edition releases. He brings nearly two decades of experience to the role, with an extensive career in the culinary, hospitality, and wine and spirits industries. In 2019, he was appointed master blender for Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co's Town Branch Whiskey, making him one of the youngest ‘up-and-coming’ master blenders on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail at the time. It is said that Kennedy has created his own 'unique' whiskey making style, with a focus on distilling whiskeys that recall a memory or feeling and sharing them with the world. Tom Steffanci, president of Redemption Whiskey owner Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits, said: "We're in constant, relentless pursuit of making the best American whiskey possible. Alan is exactly the right professional to help us achieve that goal as we dream up delicious and evocative rye-forward innovations." Last year, Redemption Whiskey was ordered to stop selling its range in its flask-shaped design after Diageo-owned Bulleit Bourbon was granted an injunction in a long-running trademark battle.]]>

https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/06/lakes-distillery-names-new-ceo/feed/ 0 English whisky producer The Lakes Distillery has appointed former William Grant & Sons executive James Pennefather as its CEO.

Pennefather is due to join The Lakes team on 1 July, assuming the role from Nigel Mills CBE who will move into the position of non-executive board director. Pennefather has commercial, operational, and leadership experience, and has worked on Diageo-owned brands. For the past nine years, Pennefather held the role of managing director of operations in India, and regional director of the Middle East, Africa, and the Indian subcontinent for Scottish spirits firm William Grant & Sons. “I first visited The Lakes Distillery on a tour with my family and was extremely impressed. What shone through was a passion to create a remarkably complex and multi-layered liquid, and an unwavering ambition to reach way beyond its borders,” said Pennefather. “I’ve worked in the premium spirits industry for more than 20 years, both in the UK and abroad, and it was clear to me that The Lakes has the potential to become one of the great luxury international spirits brands. As someone with proud Lake District roots, I could not pass on the opportunity to join the team and help to deliver on this vision. “The next phase of growth requires us to establish The Lakes as an aspirational brand in international markets. It will bring new challenges but what I can confidently say is that the whisky being made at The Lakes is perfectly placed to succeed on a global stage where opportunity abounds and having an obsession for flavour is paramount.” Pennefather’s predecessor Mills has led The Lakes Distillery since its establishment in 2012. Mills founded the facility with Paul Currie. Mills added: “Now is the right time for me to step away from the day-to-day running of The Lakes. I have been thinking about succession for some time and believe that in a little over 10 years we have built a modern and progressive whisky distillery with the building blocks in place for a very exciting new era of growth and innovation. “In the last two years alone, we have tripled spirit-making capacity, seen single malt whisky sales grow by 85% year on year, and expanded our footprint into 14 countries, including the US, France, Japan, and China. “I’m immensely proud of what we have achieved but also know that James’ experience in domestic and international markets is exactly what the business needs at this stage of our journey. I look forward to seeing The Lakes Distillery develop and scale under his leadership.” Pennefather’s appointment follows the addition of Sarah Burgess to The Lakes' whisky making team in January. Burgess was previously the lead whisky maker at The Macallan.

Chairman Tim Farazmand said: “Together with Paul and the team, Nigel has built The Lakes Distillery from the ground up and helped to inspire the regeneration of the English whisky industry. The journey the business has been on is quite remarkable, and Nigel has not only ensured we have firm foundations from which to build but will also continue to support both James and the whole team in his new role as a non-executive board director.”

https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/06/gin-guild-appoints-grand-rectifier/feed/ 0 Beefeater Gin's master distiller emeritus, Desmond Payne MBE, has been named The Gin Guild’s new grand rectifier at its annual Ginposium.

Succeeding Lesley Gracie, master distiller of Hendrick’s Gin, Payne will take up the post on 20 October 2023 for two years. Payne, who has previously received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Guild, commented: “The Gin Guild has been instrumental in guiding and protecting this splendid and rapidly expanding spirit, and it has also given us all the opportunity to get to know each other and enjoy the fruits of our labours. “To be nominated grand rectifier is a great honour and I am looking forward to taking up the position later this year.” A Q&A between guild chair Christopher Hayman and Payne was hosted, in which Payne shared insights from his 55 years in the industry. The Gin Guild has now welcomed more than 450 members, including Hanna Kaur, the beverage architect behind Crafter’s gin. “It is an incredibly empowering experience to stand beneath the tall stained glass windows of the London Guildhall with juniper berries in hand and swearing to uphold the gin tradition,” said Kaur. “Becoming a member of this esteemed organisation is a tremendous honour for any gin distiller, and I was deeply moved by the invitation to join their ranks.” “As a member of the Guild, we have the opportunity to actively contribute to the development of gin as a beverage. Moreover, it allows us to access the research carried out at the Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, which has an institute dedicated to brewing and distilling. This valuable knowledge greatly enhances our research efforts in Liviko’s laboratory. Gracie added: “The Gin Guild membership is truly global and has grown to reflect the diverse and vibrant nature of our industry and gin-loving consumers.” Ginposium The appointments were announced at The Gin Guild’s annual Ginposium, hosted at RSA House in London on 9 June, which focused on the sustainability of the gin industry. More than 120 members from across the globe attended the event, where Guild members shared experiences and latest thinking in producing, promoting and celebrating gin internationally. Participants were given the opportunity to taste Crafter’s gin, among other beverages, at the event to celebrate welcoming new members. Pal Gleed, director general of The Gin Guild, said: “Clearly sustainability is at the forefront of many members’ thinking and the coming year will see a focus for The Gin Guild to work with members to develop and demonstrate their approaches even further. “The gin industry is extremely vibrant and fast moving and it is exciting to see members turn their dynamism to this globally important subject. “We also announced plans to lead a project to help establish a model ‘gincentric’ sustainability strategy for members, taking in both the latest thoughts from the global sustainability movement, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals, and benefitting from expertise within The Gin Guild membership internationally.” Highlights of the event included a keynote presentation by Sandrine Ricard, deputy director sustainability and responsibility for Pernod Ricard in the UK, alongside specialist presentations on sustainable bottling and packaging from members Allied Glass and Atom Brands. Analyst Chris Pitcher, from equity research group Redburn, returned to interpret the latest gin industry global sales statistics, and Keli Rivers from Sipsmith discussed the rise of the Martini. Meanwhile assistant professor Matthew Pauley from Heriot-Watt University provided an update on The Gin Guild's sponsored research into juniper profiling. Pitcher said: “Gin has enjoyed phenomenal growth over the last ten years and has become one of the most widely consumed spirits globally. The cycle may have turned in some key markets, but others are picking up the slack with a variety of new trends helping further support the trajectory of the post-pandemic recovery.”

To mark The Gin Guild’s 10th anniversary, the organisation will be undertaking research amongst its membership to help shape its strategy for the next 10 years after growth from four to 450 members from more than 20 nations in its first decade.

In February, The Gin Guild announced the Jay Dhawan Scholarship in partnership with Nao Spirits, awarded annually to one student from the Indian food and beverage sector to pursue an MSc in Brewing and Distilling at Heriot-Watt University in the UK.]]>

https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/06/sb-meets-caitlin-heard-the-borders-distillery/feed/ 0 From the classroom to the still room, 23-year-old Caitlin Heard tells The Spirits Business about her role at The Borders Distillery in Hawick, Scotland, and what she thinks needs to be done to attract more young women into the world of distilling.

What made you decide to become a distiller? What is your background and training? I started working at The Borders Distillery straight from school, so came into the role looking for my next step. I worked initially part-time while studying for and sitting my Highers, had a weekend in Alton Towers to celebrate the end of school and that was me. There were a few things about a career in distilling that really appealed to me. I knew that it would be very mechanical – my dad was a mechanic and I would help him out in the workshop every day after school and at weekends, so that was an aspect of the job that I was really up for. Biology and chemistry were my favourite subjects at high school and both have been hugely helpful in understanding the distilling process, although learning something in a book and then applying it in real life are worlds apart. Since I’ve joined the distillery I’ve had training in all kinds of things, including going on a brewing and distilling course, first aid certification, and forklift driving (so we can move casks about in the warehouse). As team leader, what are you daily responsibilities at The Borders Distillery – what does an average day look like for you? My job has changed a bit since I was made team lead a few months ago. While I used to spend most of my time in the still room or warehouse, or leading guided tours, now I spend around two days on production and three days behind a laptop planning the production schedule, managing the staff rota and monitoring the production targets. The distillery is operational seven days a week and the teams work in shifts to maximise production time. How do you think brands and distilleries should and could recruit more young female distillers? I think we need to show that distilling can be a job for anyone who is keen to work hard and produce great-quality product. We don’t hire based on industry experience, just that you’re the right fit for the job. Hawick has a manufacturing background, so I think it’s second nature to the people here to feel at home in a factory environment. It kind of comes with the territory of being based in the Borders. I do think we, as an industry, can make progress by working more closely with schools, colleges and universities to show distilling as a possible and exciting career path. That’s the ethos we’ve taken on at the Borders Distillery, where we hire based on attitude and aptitude – everything else can be taught. What are your career aspirations? I aspire to reach a managerial position that will allow me to introduce more young people to the production process of Scotch whisky. If I’m going to be able to achieve this, I would still want to run production because there is no better feeling than being told someone loves the whisky you make. It can really make your day. What have you learned so far in your career that has been priceless to you? I’m always told not to think the worst, not to set up for failure. But, it’s in my nature to always be prepared and preempt a potential problem rather than face the fallout after the fact, which can have huge a knock-on effect. The weather can wreak havoc with production – it’s the biggest variable we deal with and so I’m always checking the forecast and planning ahead, working through various scenarios and figuring out solutions to minimise any impact adverse weather may have. Who is someone in the industry that you look up to? James Casey who is on our distilling team. He started out in the industry about the same age as me and worked his way up the ladder from the warehouse floor. He retired after a very long and successful career but wasn’t quite ready to completely hang up his hat, so joined us part-time back in 2018. It’s been an absolute privilege to learn under him. The Borders Distillery officially opened in 2018, and last year it released a Navy Strength Gin made with barley grown within 33 miles of the distillery.]]>

The new position will see Ba help shape the future of Tanqueray No. Ten’s experiences, including in the on-trade by sharing her knowledge and skills, and providing tools to ‘elevate’ cocktail experiences. Yesterday (7 June), Diageo announced the death of Menezes at the age of 63. Menezes had received treatment for a medical condition, and was in recovery. However, he suffered a ‘significant setback due to complications’, which led to emergency surgery on a stomach ulcer. His death came just weeks before his planned retirement from Diageo after 10 years at its helm as CEO. Diageo chief operating officer Debra Crew stepped in as interim CEO on Monday, ahead of her officially taking on the position when Menezes retired. Javier Ferrán, chairman of Diageo, called Menezes a “thoughtful and passionate colleague and friend – a true gentleman”. He “shaped Diageo to become one of the best performing, most trusted and respected consumer companies”, Ferrán said. The spirits industry has been posting tributes to Menezes online. Philippe Schaus, CEO of Moët Hennessy, the wine and spirits arm of French luxury goods conglomerate LVMH, said: “It is a privileged to have known him and to have worked alongside him. Ivan was a wonderful partner to Moët Hennessy and to myself, and I will remember how jovial, quick-minded, smiling and supportive he always was.” “A pillar of Diageo since day one, Ivan transformed the group whilst at its helm over the last 10 years and shaped our industry. His extensive knowledge of the business and his passion for the stories behind some of the world’s most popular brands compelled nothing short of admiration.” 'Genuine and authentic' Alexandre Ricard, chairman and CEO of French spirits giant Pernod Ricard, said he was “deeply saddened” to learn of Menezes’ death. “Ivan was one of the first people to call me personally when I was appointed as chairman and CEO of Pernod Ricard, a gesture I have always remembered,” Ricard recalled of his appointment in 2015. “In a competitive business world, Ivan remained a profoundly genuine and authentic person.” Mark Brown, CEO of Buffalo Trace owner Sazerac, described Menezes as “smart, educated, polished, successful” and referenced Ferrán’s remark as a “true gentleman”. “I had the pleasure of getting to know Ivan over the past 20 years, developed a great deal of admiration and respect for his journey and his ultimate success culminating with his knighthood earlier this year despite having to deal with the challenging times that publicly traded companies invariably have to deal with,” Brown said. “It is incredibly sad that we will not see the next chapter of Ivan's stellar career, Ivan had so much more yet to offer. He will be missed by those who knew him and lives he impacted.” The Scotch Whisky Association's (SWA) chief executive also called Menezes a “towering figure in Scotch whisky, who not only helped to shape the global success of the industry but laid the foundation for future generations”. Menezes had served as chair of council for the SWA. Diageo, the world's biggest Scotch distiller, made a £185 million (US$255m) investment in Scotch whisky tourism in 2018 – the largest single investment programme in the industry. In September 2021, the firm opened its eight‐floor Johnnie Walker Princes Street visitor experience in Edinburgh, and upgraded four of its Scotch whisky visitor centres. “It is too soon to encapsulate fully the impact he had on the Scotch whisky industry, that time will come later,” SWA CEO Mark Kent added. “But it is as deep and long lasting as the affection in which he was held by those who knew him best. Aside from being a consummate professional, one of the most successful business leaders of his generation, he was a warm and caring human being. “Through our grief, that legacy will sustain us, encourage us to follow the example he set, and enable us to remember fondly the time we had with him.” Ugo Fiorenzo, chairman of trade body the Distilled Spirits Council of the US (Discus) and managing director at Campari America and Canada, described the Diageo CEO as a titan in the industry. “Ivan Menezes was a true luminary, combining extraordinary leadership with a passion for his craft,” he said. “His contributions will continue to shape our industry and inspire generations to come.” 'Exceptional leader' Chris Swonger, president and CEO of Discus and Responsibility.org, highlighted Menezes’ vast contributions to the spirits sector. “Ivan was an exceptional leader whose contributions to the spirits industry were immeasurable,” Swonger said. “His visionary approach, unwavering commitment to responsibility, and dedication to building some of the world's best brands, will forever be remembered. Ivan's passion for the spirits industry will be greatly missed. “Under his guidance on the Discus board, the spirits industry experienced tremendous achievements, witnessing remarkable growth, while also prioritising sustainability and diversity initiatives to enhance the entire spirits sector. Ivan’s tireless dedication to fostering inclusivity and his commitment to consumers played a pivotal role in driving the industry forward." Francis Creighton, president and CEO of Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America (WSWA), said Menezes had built Diageo into a “best-in-class international company”. “His forward-thinking business practices were respected from Wall Street to Main Street and connected with millions of consumers around the world,” Creighton continued. “American distribution partners were proud to partner in building Diageo brands that Sir Ivan himself championed and positioned with bars, restaurants, and off-premise retailers.” Jack Daniel's producer Brown-Forman said in a statement that Menezes' "influence could be felt in every market where beverage alcohol is sold". Beam Suntory, owner of brands such as Jim Beam and Maker’s Mark, described Menezes as a “thoughtful and kind leader, and an example for all of us to strive towards”.]]>

https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/06/diageo-ceo-ivan-menezes-dies/feed/ 0 Sir Ivan Menezes, chief executive officer of Diageo, has died at the age of 63 after a short illness.

Earlier this week, Diageo had appointed Debra Crew as interim CEO while Menezes recovered from emergency surgery on a stomach ulcer. Crew became interim CEO with immediate effect, ahead of her appointment as CEO on 1 July. Menezes planned to retire from the company on 31 June 2023 after 10 years leading the company as CEO. In a statement, Diageo announced Menezes had died with his family at his side. Javier Ferrán, chairman of Diageo, said it was an “incredibly sad day” and called Menezes “one of the finest leaders of his generation”. “Ivan was there at the creation of Diageo and over 25 years, shaped Diageo to become one of the best performing, most trusted and respected consumer companies,” Ferrán said. “I saw first-hand his steadfast commitment to our people and to creating a culture than enabled everyone to thrive. He invested his time and energy in people at every level of the company and saw potential that others may have overlooked. This is one of many reasons why he was beloved by our employees, past and present. “Ivan’s energy and his commitment to diversity created a truly inclusive business and enabled Diageo to have a positive impact on the communities we serve. His passion for our brands was second to none and in his heart, he remained the Johnnie Walker marketer from his early days. The desire to build the world’s best brands never left him. “We are truly privileged to have had the opportunity to work alongside such a thoughtful and passionate colleague and friend – a true gentleman. He has built an extraordinary legacy.” Career highlights Diageo said Menezes was one of Britain’s longest-serving FTSE chief executives. He joined the company when it was formed in 1997 after a merger and held a number of roles over his 25-year career at Diageo. During his time at the company, he served as global marketing director for UDV in 1998 and helped develop Johnnie Walker’s iconic Keep Walking campaign. This was followed by senior positions including president of the firm’s North America arm, and chairman roles for Diageo's Asia Pacific, and Latin America and Caribbean regions. Menezes navigated Diageo through the Covid-19 pandemic, delivering a net sales value that was 36% higher than in 2019, the company noted. Menezes also championed diversity at the company. More than 40% of Diageo's senior leadership positions are held globally by women, while 37% are ethnically diverse. Diageo credited Menezes for the firm's growth during his tenure, with the firm currently selling more than 200 brands in 180-plus markets, and holding the position of the number one company by net sales value in Scotch whisky, vodka, gin, rum, Canadian whisky, liqueurs, and Tequila, according to IWSR Drinks Market Analysis data. The company owns a number of spirits brands including Smirnoff vodka, Johnnie Walker, Gordon’s gin, Baileys liqueur, and Casamigos Tequila. In January this year, Menezes received a knighthood for services to business and to equality in the King’s 2023 New Year Honours List. Menezes is survived by his wife Shibani and two children, Nikhil and Rohini.]]>

https://www.thespiritsbusiness.com/2023/05/distill-ventures-appoints-new-ceo/feed/ 0 Diageo-backed spirits accelerator Distill Ventures (DV) has promoted its North America managing director, Heidi Dillon, to chief executive.

Dillon has led Distill Ventures’ US business since 2020. She will take over the chief executive role from Distill Ventures co-founder Frank Lampen, who will remain involved in the company as chair. Distill Ventures said Dillon has played a key role in building its non-alcoholic business, and helped ‘shape perceptions’ of the category. Her most notable contribution was the support she provided for Seedlip’s growth in the US, before the brand joined Diageo’s portfolio, as well as the launch of Ritual Zero Proof. Dillon also led the creation and launch of Distill Ventures’ Pre-Accelerator programme, which provides funding to entrepreneurs from underrepresented backgrounds. To date, 15 brands have received investment from the programme. Dillon said: “Over the last decade, DV has demonstrated its strengths in spotting trends early and finding great founders and brands. We’ve proudly supported companies that are creating entirely new categories like non-alcoholic 'spirits' and new world whiskies. “As CEO and together with the team, we will strengthen our commitment to elevating diversity and gender representation. Putting the changing consumer at the heart of all of our thinking enables continued innovation and transforms the way we interact with the spirits industry, driving the next decade of growth.” Distill Ventures will celebrate its 10th anniversary this summer. The company employs more than 500 people across the US, Japan, Europe and Australia. The firm has facilitated five acquisitions by Diageo, including Seedlip, Australian cold brew coffee liqueur Mr Black, Japanese rice whisky Kikori, and German vermouth Belsazar. Lampen added: “Diageo has also been a vital partner – they are uniquely placed to understand opportunities within the global drinks market and have proven their willingness to embrace innovation and new ways of thinking. “Our global team of 30 drinks experts is ready to shape the next 10 years under Heidi’s leadership and incredible team building skills. "With her clarity of vision, commitment to DV and her position as a role model for inclusivity and driving change, I look forward to supporting her as we shape both DV’s future and the global drinks industry.”]]>
